Understanding Pain Management and Opioids: A Case-Based Curriculum

Do this one first. It disappears with the deadline, and the topic (opioid indications, dosing, monitoring, and risk reduction) fits Pennsylvania’s 2-hour Act 124 requirement on pain management and opioid prescribing, so the same two hours can count toward both.

Clinical

Practice, technology, and the profession

Also free, but Category 1-B

1-B hours do not count toward the 20 Category 1-A hours, but they do count toward the 100-hour total.

How to get the credit

  1. Create a free account at the AOA Learning Portal. A membership prompt may appear; you do not need one for these courses.
  2. Open each course from the links above and register at the $0 price.
  3. Watch the content and complete the post-test and evaluation.
  4. Download every certificate and keep them in one folder. Pennsylvania audits a sample of renewals, and the certificate is your documentation.

2 hours Act 31Child abuse recognition and reporting from a DHS-approved provider. The University of Pittsburgh course at reportabusepa.pitt.edu is free. Board records can lag 7 to 10 days, so finish it early.

Renew by Oct 31Through PALS. There is no grace period.

Free courses close 5.25 of the 20 1-A hours short. The same portal lists paid on-demand conferences that carry larger 1-A blocks if you still need hours.

Requirements are summarized from the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine. The board’s text controls; confirm anything that affects your license there.

Who put this together

An ER doctor doing the same renewal.

I’m Rick Pescatore, a board-certified emergency physician and Editor-in-Chief of Emergency Medicine News. I also founded BellyMD, where we study and treat disorders of gut-brain interaction. If this saved you an evening, pass it to the DOs in your group.
